I believe that every sketch we make is a story.
Tender, reverent, and uniquely our own.
Not simply a likeness, but a quiet act of devotion.
Not merely a practice, but a presence.
Not just a drawing, but a dialogue between self and wild.
Each line is a thread, tugged from the deep well of cellular memory, of ancient intuition, of presence and wonder.
Every pencil or paint stroke is a breath.
Every breath a connection.
To sketch a bird, a hare, a tree,
is to say: I see you.
I honour you.
You are not forgotten.
I saw an owl. I observed deeply. I imagined my own wings.
I became part owl.
And now, on my page, is not just owl, but owl and me.
In a world that tells us to hurry, to strive, to perfect—this is my rebellion.
Slow. Sacred. Wild. Sketch. Story.
I draw to remember the old ways, of necessary connection to our wild kin.
I draw to soften the noise so I can hear them speak.
I draw to reweave what has been frayed in this ancient tapestry:
my connection to land, to the long lineage of my mothers,
to the wild being in the hedge and the wild being in my heart.
This is art-making as self-care.
As return.
As reconnection.
To place. To purpose. To the wild and wondrous pulse of life that thrums and hums in all things.
To which we are all a part of, not apart from.
This is my invitation to you, wild heart.
You don’t need to be perfect.
You just need to begin.
To look closely. Deeply.
To stay curious. Courageous. Compassionate.
To hold a pencil with love in your heart.
You are already part of the story.
And your story is waiting to be drawn.
We need your story, your art, now more than ever. During the hardest times is when art is even more important, a respite, a way to foster resilience, and a connection to what matters - right here, right now, the wild in your heart, the wild you share the world with. Let me help you connect to your wild, creative self.
Lovely, moving, nurturing words, Natalie. Even if we know these things, we need to have them written for us, sung to us, drawn for us. Thank you for the reminder. These words bring joy to my heart and solace to my soul in these harsh and dangerous times when too many only deal with our wildkin with cruelty and disrespect. And, when too many people to that to our wildkin they also find the permission to treat their fellow humans with the same disrespect and cruelty. When we pick up a pencil or brush to make art, when we pick up an instrument to make music, when we pick up a pen to write poetry or story we challenge that mindset and loss of connection, because we are forging new connections with our souls and the souls of all Beings. It is the most important work that can be done now. It is the only work that can save us from our worst selves.
Beautiful Natalie! I read a quote yesterday 'that which you seek, is seeking you ....' by Rumi.
It's pure love and the purity of love we seek, I seek in my drawings and read in your words. Amazing. Thank you for this. I love it!!!
